BEACON ART SALON AND BEAHIVE HOST EXCLUSIVE EVENT
FEATURING ADVANCE SCREENING OF 'COMPASSION'
FROM SEASON FIVE OF ART:21 – ART IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Peabody Award-Winning Documentary Series Premieres in October on PBS

Tues, Oct. 6, 8–9:30pm

The Beacon Art Salon (BAS) and BEAHIVE, in partnership with Art21, present a sneak preview of the fifth season of the Peabody Award-winning Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century, the only prime time national television series focused exclusively on contemporary art. The Beacon Art Salon is a group of artists and art enthusiasts and BEAHIVE is a shared workspace and collaborative community — both in Beacon, NY.

The event is Tuesday, October 6, 8:00 to 9:30 PM, at BEAHIVE (291 Main Street, Beacon, NY). It features a one-hour screening of the premiere episode, "Compassion," followed by a brief presentation by Stacey Ward Kelly, BAS director and Art21 Institute Teacher. It is free and open to the public and follows the BAS monthly meeting, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.

BAS founder Stacey Ward Kelly is one of 15 educators chosen nationwide from NY, Chicago and LA to be in the Art21 Educators program, a year-long professional development initiative designed to cultivate and support K-12 art educators interested in bringing contemporary art, artists, and themes into their classrooms.

The "Compassion" episode features artists whose works explore the possibility of understanding and reconciling past and present, while exposing injustice and expressing tolerance for others: William Kentridge, Doris Salcedo and Carrie Mae Weems. Weems incidentally did a photo project in Beacon a few years ago.

The season premieres on PBS the following night, October 7th, with a new episode each Wednesday during the month (10pm (check local listings). Through in-depth profiles and interviews, the four-part series reveals the inspiration, vision and techniques behind the creative works of some of today's most thought-provoking artists.

This screening is part of Art21 Access '09, an international screening initiative created to increase knowledge of contemporary art, ignite dialogue, and inspire creative thinking. Screenings are held at over 300 museums, schools, libraries, art spaces, and community centers and is organized in collaboration with Americans for the Arts' National Arts and Humanities Month.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Employing stop-motion animation, drawing, and performance, William Kentridge creates poignant films and stage productions that transform sobering political events — such as apartheid, revolution, and colonialism — into poetic allegories. Kentridge, a South African artist perhaps most famous for his animated films, and who works in diverse media including sculpture, charcoal drawings, and prints, was included in the 2009 Time magazine 100 most influential people and is currently staging Shostakovich's The Nose for the Metropolitan Opera.

Carrie Mae Weems takes inspiration from colloquial forms — a joke, song, plea, or rebuke — to create complex photographic series that scrutinize subjectivity and insist that pernicious stereotypes be held up to the mirror of everyday emotional and intellectual life. In a recent video and photo series, filmed around the time of the 2008 United States presidential election, Weems reflects upon the legacy of the 1960s that led to this recent historic moment.

Doris Salcedo draws from the oppressive history of her country, Colombia, when creating her work. Her understated sculptures and installations embody the silenced lives of the marginalized, from individual victims of violence in her own country to the larger disempowered populations of the Third World.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

The Beacon Art Salon (www.giraffeandturtle.com/bas.html) is a group of artists and art enthusiasts who live, work, show or play in Beacon, NY. The members gather once a month to support one another and build Beacon's art community. Meetings are open to all.

BEAHIVE is a new kind of shared workspace for independent workers and collaborative community in Beacon. It provides a shared, creative work environment for solopreneurs, the creative class, microbusinesses and consultants. It is building a community of members with a range of creative and technical talents and a desire to improve their professional lives, their personal lives and their community.
ABOUT ART21
Over the past ten years, Art21 (www.art21.org) has established itself as the preeminent chronicler of contemporary art and artists through Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century. In addition to its PBS series and year-round series-based education and public programs efforts, Art21 has expanded its film production and educational efforts in recent years, including the premiere of the new short-format documentary series Art21–Exclusive on multiple online platforms and expansion of the Art21 Blog. New programs are also in the works, including a feature film as well as Art21 Educators, an ongoing professional development program for teachers.

AUGUST BZZZ
For such a traditionally slow time of the year, there seems to be a lot happening, particularly among our members.
If you missed out on the HV Real Food tasting event last week, well, you missed some mouth-watering, nutrient-dense, goof-for-you-and-the-planet local vittles. Salivate over these pics by member Paul David O'Hanlon.

We had an encouraging turnout for our first happy hour/screening in July (Persepolis) and we're continuing the OPEN HIVE / film series this month with The Corporation. We're also starting our regular game nights dubbed — what else? — OPEN HIVE / game. (Info above.)
Those programs are open to all (hence, OPEN HIVE), but we also have member-only events — like our new weekly lunch at the hive. And on Aug. 4 we gathered some members around the speakerphone and listened in on a one-hour phone seminar on social media with two leaders in the field. Missing out? Join us.

[BEAHIVE BZZZ] LET THE BZZZ BEGIN / EVENTS!

What an auspicious beginning. We've been open just a couple months and we have a hive of 19 Founding Members (21 if you count these two below). Now accepting regular members.
Unless you've been studying tribes on a lost island then you probably know our OPEN HIVE launch party on June 20 buzzed beyond expectations. Despite the monsoon, at least 80-90 people showed up, including Mayor Gold and his wife. Check out some photos.
Our first workshop, "Pitching Your Story to Publications," by member Kelly Kingman on July 1 was also a success, with about 10 participants.
We've got several other happenings lined up this month at the hive (see events below). We're launching a series of social and cultural events keeping the OPEN HIVE theme with our first monthly screening, OPEN HIVE / film. (A/V generously provided by Fovea.) Stay tuned for a host of programs and projects.
The buzz is really spreading. You may know that Chronogram included BEAHIVE in its profile of Beacon in May. Also doing stories on us: Hudson Valley Business Journal (7/13), Poughkeepsie Journal (next week) and Southern Dutchess Focus (7/18).
/ MEMBER BZZZ /
Together with several BEAHIVE members, writer/local foods activist Anne Dailey is expanding the food coop that she's been facilitating for a couple years now, newly christened Hudson Valley Real Food. A new website is up and we're hosting a local foods tasting event July 28 (see events below and website.)
Nutrition and lifestyle counselor Andrea Ramirez launched the True Nourishment Inner Circle for career-driven women. It includes monthly teleseminars and Q&A sessions with her, a "Recipes that Will Save Your Life!" binder with recipes delivered monthly to members' doors, and more. She's also leading the nutrition workshop on July 16 listed in the events below.
Mara Farrell has been working tirelessly to preserve an important Revolutionary War site just down the road from us: the Fishkill Supply Depot, where archaeologists recently discovered what could well be the largest burial ground from that war ever identified. Senator Schumer recently took up the cause with legislation to make the site eligible for federal preservation funds. The media has started taking note, including a recent AP story.

OPEN HIVE BUZZED BEYOND EXPECTATIONS

Wow, I'm overwhelmed. Despite the monsoon, at least 80-90 people showed up at the OPEN HIVE launch party on Saturday (including a few friends from the city who braved the downpour on the Taconic).

Thanks to all who came. It's heartwarming to have so much support (or maybe it was just the free food and drink...). And special thanks to those who donated time or stuff to make OPEN HIVE such a success (see below).

BEAHIVE is just getting started and we're already at 17 members. Stay tuned for a host of programs and projects. Here are just a few coming up in the next month:
